Shane Long has created history by scoring the fastest ever Premier League goal for Southampton against Watford.

The FA Cup finalists conceded in bizarre fashion just over a week ago when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang charged down Ben Foster’s clearance to score the only goal of the game against Arsenal, but the former Manchester United and England goalkeeper was blameless on this occasion.

Southampton striker Long took just six seconds to break the deadlock at Vicarage Road, blocking Craig Cathcart’s attempted clearance and racing through to lift the ball over the hapless Foster.

The Irishman’s effort comfortably beat the previous record held by Ledley King, who scored for Tottenham at Bradford in 9.82 seconds back in 2000.

Long’s goal, his fourth of the season and third in his last four games, was the fastest in the Premier League since Christian Eriksen’s opener for Spurs against Manchester United at Wembley last season, scored in 10.54 seconds.
